Litany 39:12

about

The text for Second Thought was generated while listening to myself reading "France" by Gertrude Stein. Her words, phrases, and syntax seeped merged into my own rendom thought streams.

The composition was inspired by John Cage and David Tudor's "Indeterminancy." Instead of two performers in two different rooms, "Second Thought" was realized by mixing a recording of poet David Rosenthal reading the text on one track and sound clips playing randomly in the other.

Like the poem of the same name by John Ashbery, "Litany" is a mash-up of two different texts read by two different readers: "France" by Gertrude Stein (read by me), and "Second Thought" by David Braden (read by David Rosenthal.
